First Summer In The Country

The radishes are first and then the beans
Corn comes later, pumpkins last of all
Beans are strong and peas must be shucked
In enormous piles, with friends

Tomatoes are delicate, sun kissed
Zucchini is good for bread
Or selling from your bicycle
Up and down the road

Weeding takes an hour or so
On a sunny patch of land
In 1972
Upstate New York

Overwhelmed city dwellers
Newly relocated
Never saw a yard or met a four legged thing
Outside a zoo

The fruit of Eden could never have tasted
Quite so good
My father stripped to his t shirt
Chomping on a carrot

My mother beaming
Holding a squash
Long hair in braids
Like Pocahontas

And me in the dirt
Up to my ears
Seven years old
And never happier
